greetings, everyone --
Sorry for the late notice, but Silvia Federici, author of the recent
Autonomedia book "Caliban and the Witch", will be giving a talk and
discussion in New York City this Sunday, January 23rd, at Bluestockings
Radical Bookstore at 7pm.
"Caliban and the Witch" is a study of the female body in the transition
to capitalism. It analyzes the rise of capitalism over several hundred
years -- through the peasant uprisings of the Middle Ages and the great
witch-hunts in Europe and the Americas -- focussing on the repression of
women, sexuality, and women's labor as fundamental to the emergence of
capitalism as a global system. Silvia has a lot to say about the history
of women's resistance to capitalism, and is able to talk quite profoundly
about contemporary struggles -- especially in Africa, where she's
maintained alignments since the 80s when she taught in Nigeria -- while
rooting these struggles in a 600-year history of repression.
This will actually be the second in a series of discussions on Silvia's
book. MP3s of an earlier discussion of the book are online at
http://silviafederici.littlerednotebook.com, and the book itself is
available online at http://www.autonomedia.org/caliban
Bluestockings is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan at 172 Allen
Street between Stanton and Rivington, 1 block south of Houston and 1st
Avenue. More info is at http://www.bluestockings.com
