1. New book: We are happy to announce the availability of PROVO:
AMSTERDAM’S ANARCHIST REVOLT, by Richard Kempton.

Provo was one of those spirited resistance groups of the 1960s, like the
Diggers, Motherfuckers, Black Mask, the Yippies, the Situationists and the
White Panthers, whose interventions into everyday life still incite the
imagination of today’s radical milieu. The Provos provoked the police via
“happenings” and non-violent direct action, advocated for marijuana
legalization in Amsterdam, developed the White Bicycle Plan, and
established the groundwork of the anarchist Kabouter party, among many
other legendary episodes during their relatively short existence
(1962-1967).

PROVO is the first-ever book-length study of the Provos’ history available
in English. In eight chapters and seven appendices, Richard Kempton, who
arrived on the Provo scene in 1965, narrates the rise and fall of the
movement, touching upon its antecedents, contemporaneous influences,
inheritors, political successes and failures, and its philosophical
underpinnings via Sartre. He chronicles Robert Jasper Grootveld’s
anti-cancer campaign (a critique of the culture of addicted consumers and
the cigarette industry); the riots against Princess Beatrix’s
controversial marriage to an ex-Nazi (in the wake of her sister’s
unpopular marriage to a fascist); the White Plans, which included the
famous White Bicycle Plan (eco-sustainable, anti-capitalist, communal
transportation), White Chicken Plan (which called for the reform of the
Amsterdam police from agents of state brutality into social workers), and
the White Wives Plan (women’s sexual health advocacy), among others; as
well as the manifestos, leaflets, and eponymous publications they left
behind as their legacy. His firsthand account of these events, combined
with analysis of the social and political context the movement inhabited,
makes for an incredibly enjoyable and informative read.
